Additional Information:

As early as the mid-end of the 19th century, Patek Philippe took a leading role in the Swiss watchmaking industry by raising manufacturing standards and measuring time; In fact, they´ve worked so well that before his death on March 1, 1877, Patek had been awarded the title of count by Pope Pius IX.  After the death of the founders, three former employees of the company, including Edouard Kohn, took over (around 1876).

In 1891, Edouard Kohn leaves Patek Philippe to take over the management of the watchmaker's firm Henri-Robert Ekegren (see watch document).

Koehn, Eduard, former Patek Philippe director:

German watchmaker Eduard Koehn was born in 1839 as the son of Karl Koehn, the court purveyor of the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. He studied watchmaking from 1859 in Geneva. He then joined Patek Philippe in 1861 as a simple watchmaker and was appointed director after 15 years. In 1891 Edouard Koehn acquired H.R. Ekegren. The quality awareness that he acquired during his many years at Patek Philippe was later reflected in his own products designed and manufactured by him. In 1892 he improved the retrograde display invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in Swiss Patent no. 4746th; Koehn became famous for his very flat watches. The company also supplied watches to Tiffany & Co. The company manufactured compasses for the British Army in World War I. Eduard Koehn died in 1908, his son Eduard Koehn Jr. took over the business and continued it until 1933.

When Ed Koehn left Patek Philippe, he set out to make “a finer watch than Patek Philippe”; there is no doubt he was making one of the finest watches in the world.
